How to create an invisible folder in windows 10 and 11

How to

Most people do not know this, but Windows allows you to create invisible folders. Follow these steps to make an existing folder invisible or create a new invisible folder.

In case you are wondering, invisible folders are not hidden folders. They can be accessed just like regular folders. When you hide a folder, Windows removes it from its normal structure. You will not be able to see the folder unless you explicitly toggle the “Hidden Items” option in File Explorer.

On the other hand, making a folder invisible causes it to stay in the standard hierarchy. However, it is completely transparent. For example, if you create a folder on the desktop, move it to a corner, and then make it invisible, the folder will still exist, but it will be invisible. Unlike hidden folders, you do not need to unscreen it first. You can access it just like any other folder.

As you can imagine, this works well as a prank or party trick. It can also be useful to hide less important items.

IMPORTANT: Do not store or hide important data in this way. It is not a secure way to store personal information or sensitive files.

The following procedure works the same in Windows 10 and 11.

Creating Invisible Folders

Creating or making a folder invisible is relatively simple. There are two basic steps. First, name the folder with a blank string and change its icon to a blank image. This may sound difficult, but it is relatively simple. How? Read more .

  14. With this , you have created an invisible folder in Windows.

Detailed instructions:

First, create a new folder on the desktop or anywhere you like. To do so, right-click and select “New → Folder”. If you already have a folder you wish to make invisible, skip this step.

When you create a new folder, the default name is “New Folder”. You will need to change it to an empty string. To do so, select the folder and press the “F2” key. You can also right-click on the folder and select “Rename”.

Next, hold down the “ALT” key on your keyboard and press “0160” on the numeric keypad. If your keyboard does not have a numeric keypad, copy (” “) the quoted string. Or copy an empty string from the Windows built-in “Character Map” tool.

If you are concerned, typing “SPACE” or deleting the existing name and saving will not work.

Next, you need to change the default folder icon to a blank icon. Right click on the folder and select Properties.

Open the Customize tab of the Properties window and click the Change Icon button.

Scroll sideways until you find an empty icon and click the “Change Icon” button. Select the empty icon and click “OK.

Click the “Apply” and “OK” buttons to save the changes.

That is all. An invisible folder has been created. Put it in the corner and no one will find it. You can change “View” and “Sort” to sort it among the other folders and icons on the desktop. At this time, you may see suspiciously empty space between other files and folders.

You can go one step further and hide invisible folders (right click -> Properties -> select the “Hidden” option). This way, if someone selects the entire desktop or rearranges the icons, the folders will not be visible. An added benefit is that the folder or file will remain invisible even after you unhide it. You can also hide folders with the attrib command.

As I said earlier, this is just a trick to show off or play with friends. Never use it to protect important confidential files. You may want to use software such as BitLocker or VeraCrypt.
