Microsoft Edge is the default browser in Windows 11. If you do not wish to use it, follow these steps to change your default browser in Windows 11.
Windows 11 has many improvements over older versions. Notable improvements include a consistent design, improved stability, redesigned apps, a new Settings app, and new apps.
Windows 11 has greatly improved the overall usability of the operating system. For the most part, the community has embraced Windows 11 positively.
However, if there is one thing Microsoft has failed to do, it is the way it changed the default apps in earlier versions of Windows 11. In principle, Windows always allowed an application to be set as the default for a particular file type or protocol. However, this is no longer possible in Windows 11. At least in older versions, such as Windows 7 and 8, this process is not seamless. The same is true for changing the default browser in Windows 11 .
However, after much criticism from users and the industry, Microsoft has changed this cumbersome approach. With Windows 11, you can now easily change your default browser. Here is how to do it.

What is the default browser in Windows 11?
As you can imagine, Microsoft Edge is the default browser in Windows 11. Unlike older browsers like Internet Explorer, the new Edge browser is very good.
Edge can rival Google Chrome in all features and compatibility. For laptops, the Edge browser has longer battery life than other browsers and runs smoothly thanks to Windows-specific optimizations. Not to mention, Microsoft is constantly improving and adding new features to make the Edge browser more efficient and functional.
Why Change the Default Browser in Windows 11
As good as the Edge browser is, there are many reasons to change the default browser in Windows 11. For example, you may not like the Edge browser, you may be too familiar with the browser you already use, you may have website compatibility issues, or you may rely on proprietary extensions or add-ons.
Unlike previous versions, Microsoft has made it difficult to set a default browser in Windows 11. That is the only thing I don’t like about Windows 11. However, it is possible to change the default app. It’s just that the process is no longer user-friendly and easy. That’s where this simple guide comes in.
So without further ado, here is how to change the default browser in Windows 11.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before performing the following steps, make sure that the browser you want to set as default is installed on Windows 11. For example, to set Google Chrome as the default browser in Windows 11, you must first install Google Chrome. Otherwise, it will not appear in the list of applications.
Changing the Default Browser in Windows 11
In recent versions of Windows 11, Microsoft has brought back an easy way to change your default browser. Simply click a button and there is no need to change it for different types of files.
- Use “Win + I” to launch the “Settings” application.
- Select “Apps” in the sidebar.
- Click on “Default Apps”.
- Find and click any browser in the “Apps” list.
- Click the “Set as default” button at the top.
- Doing this will change your default browser at the same time.
Change the default browser using the file type settings
In Windows 11, you can change the default browser using the Settings app. For example, you can set Google Chrome as your default browser instead of Microsoft Edge. I say Google Chrome, but you can choose any browser, such as Firefox or Brave. The procedure is the same.
- Press the key combination “Windows key + I” to open “Settings”.
- Select “Apps” in the sidebar.
- Click on “Default Apps”.
- Locate and click on the browser app.
- Click the “.htm” option.
- Select your browser from the list.
- Click “OK.”
- Do the same for the “.html”, “HTTP”, and “HTTPS” options.
- Exit the “Settings” application.
- You have now changed the default browser for Windows 11.
Step 1: Open the “Settings” application from the “Start” menu. Search or press the shortcut key “Windows key + I”. You can also right click on the Start menu and select the “Settings” option.
Step 2: After opening the Settings app, go to the “Apps > Default Apps” page. As you can see from the page name, this is where you can manage all of your Windows 11 default app settings.
Step 3: Now find the browser you want to set as default and click on it. You can use the search bar under the “Set Application Defaults” heading. I chose to set Google Chrome as my default browser.
Step 4: Now click on the “.htm” option, select your browser, and click the “OK” button to save your changes. I chose Google Chrome. Choose your preferred browser. As I said earlier, Microsoft makes it difficult to change the default browser.
Step 5: Click the “.html” option, select your browser and click the “OK” button to save your changes.
Step 6: Scroll down and click on the “HTTP” option. Then select your browser and click the “OK” button to save the changes.
Step 7: Click on the “HTTPS” option. Then select your browser and click the “OK” button to save the changes.
Step 8: (Optional) You can do the same for other protocols such as PDF, FTP, SVG, and SHTML. For example, if you want to open a PDF document directly in Google Chrome, you must click on the PDF option and select Google Chrome. The same goes for other protocols.
Step 9: When you are done, close the Settings application. To confirm, click on any web link or .html file. It should open in your new default browser. Alternatively, you can open your browser’s settings page to see if it is set as your default browser. For Google Chrome, go to “chrome://settings/defaultBrowser”. You should see “Google Chrome is the default browser.
You can now change the default browser for Windows 11.
Browser does not appear in the Windows 11 apps list
If you do not see your favorite browser on the “Settings > Apps > Default Apps” page, it may not be installed at all.
To check, try searching for your browser in the Start menu. Or, open the Settings app, go to the Apps & Features page, and see if the browser is in the list of installed apps.
If not, we recommend downloading and installing a browser. Then follow the steps above to change the default browser in Windows 11.
Hope this helps.
