Using extensions to block websites in the Edge browser

The Edge browser is based on Chrome. This means that you can use Chrome extensions on your Edge browser. As many of you know, extensions can do many things. This includes blocking websites. So, here is how to use a website blocking extension in the Edge browser.

“Add to chrome > Add extensionbutton to install the application. First time users may need to click the “Allow extensions for other stores” button at the top.

Once installed, click on the “Extensions Overflow” icon, then click on the “BlockSite” menu icon.

Enter the website address in the BlockSite field and click the “Add Item” button.

As soon as you do this, the website will be added to the block list.

From that point on, the website will be blocked by the Edge browser.

This extension has many options and features to play with. We recommend that you play with the options and choose the one that works best for you. For example, you can block websites according to a schedule or redirect websites.

Block websites using a host file in Edge browser

  1. Launch the Start menu.
  2. Request “Notepad.”
  3. Right-click in Notepad results.
  4. Select “Run as administrator.”
  5. Click “File > Open” in Notepad.
  6. Navigate to the “C:\WindowsSystem32drivers” folder.
  7. Select “All Files” from the drop-down menu.
  8. Select the “hosts” file.
  9. Click the “Open” button.
  10. At the bottom of the file, type the following command. Replace “example.com” with the address of your chosen website.

  11. Click “File >Save”.
  12. Exit the Notepad application.
  13. To block another Web site, repeat the above command.
  14. The website is now blocked.

Detailed instructions:

First, open the Start menu and search for Notepad . Then, in the right panel, select Run as Administrator . You can also right-click Notepad and select the “Run as administrator” option.

You will need to open the hosts file in Notepad. To do so, select Open from the File menu.

The above operation will bring up the file selection window. Navigate to the C:↵WindowsSystem32↵drivers↵ folder. Now select All Files from the drop-down menu in the lower right corner.

Then select the hosts file and click the Open button. This will open the hosts file in the Notepad application.

In the hosts file, you can block websites in the Edge browser with the following format example.com must be replaced with the address of any website. The line starting with a “*” is a comment line where you can write the reason why you are blocking the web site. This way, the next time you open the hosts file, it will be easier to remember the reason. This is not a requirement. So, if necessary, remove the comment line.

Once you have saved the file, close the Notepad application. From this point on, the Edge browser will block the website.

Remember that blocking a website using the host file method will block it system-wide, including all other browsers.
