Don’t like the default device icon? You can change it. Here is how to change the drive icon in Windows 11 and 11 operating systems.

In Windows, all included drives and partitions have the same icon. You will see the drive icon on the “This Computer” page of File Explorer and in the sidebar. In general, there is nothing strange about having similar drive icons. In fact, drive icons make it easy to identify a drive from its normal folders, files, and other system components.

But what if you don’t like the default drive icon, or are fed up with it? In that case, you can change the Windows disk icon. This way you can customize your drive and make it look different from other drives.

Unlike renaming a drive, changing the drive icon requires the use of the “autorun.inf” file. Of course, this is not as easy as renaming a device, but it is just as easy.

  10. Close the text file.
  11. Rename the text file to ” autorun.inf “.
  12. Close File Explorer.
  13. Restart the computer.
  14. Accordingly, change the device icon .

Detailed instructions:

First, copy the icon to the root of the drive whose icon you want to change or set new. For example, we want to change the icon for device D, so we copied the icon to the root of device D.

Note: If the icon is on another device, the process will not work and you will see an empty icon.

Next, create a new text file by right clicking and selecting “New > Text Document”. Next, rename the text file to “autorun”.

Save and close the file using the “Ctrl+S” hotkey.

After saving, rename the file from “autorun.txt” to “autorun.inf”. You are effectively changing the file format from TXT to INF.

Finally, close File Explorer and restart your computer. After the restart, an icon for the new drive will appear in File Explorer.

Optional steps:

You can hide the autorun icons and files to make them look nicer. To do so, right-click on the autorun.inf and icon.ico files individually and select the Properties option. Select the “Hidden” checkbox and click the “OK” button. This will prevent the files from displaying properly in the normal folder structure.
